Background [edit]

Coldplay lead vocalist Chris Martin met American actress Gwyneth Paltrow in late Oct 2002, three weeks subsequently the death of her begetter, television manager Bruce Paltrow. As their relationship grew closer, Martin and Paltrow would listen to Coldplay's anthology Parachutes, especially the uplifting song "Everything'south Non Lost," to help her procedure the loss of her male parent. Martin and Paltrow married in December 2003.[one]

"Fix You" was inspired past Martin's wish to go on helping Paltrow get through her grief. He wanted to base the song on a church organ; instead he powered up a synthesizer given to Paltrow by her father, the instrument sitting unused in their house, to find "it had these astonishing sounds on it."[2] Martin said that the song'southward composition is influenced by English alternative rock band Elbow's 2003 anthem "Grace Under Pressure".[iii] [four] [five] In 2005, he described "Set up You lot" as "probably the most important song we've e'er written".[6] He wrote 4 other songs for or virtually Paltrow: "Moses" (2003), "Swallowed in the Body of water" (2005), "Magic" and "Another's Arms" (2014).[vii]

All of Coldplay helped in writing the song. During a track-past-track assay, bassist Guy Berryman observed that "Set up You" takes "a bit of inspiration" from "Many Rivers to Cantankerous" past Jimmy Cliff (1969). Berryman added, "It becomes its ain matter, kind of like points of inspiration that kind of lead you lot down sure paths. Whenever you lot want to write a song like someone else, information technology ultimately ends upwardly sounding similar something different anyway."[viii]

Organisation [edit]

The vocal features an organ and pianoforte in the fundamental of E major.[9] Information technology begins as a hushed electric organ carol, with Martin'south falsetto.[x] The song so builds in acoustic guitar and piano, accompanied by the sound of string instruments during the showtime choruses. The melody shifts to a plaintive three-note guitar line, ringing through a rhythmic upbeat pulsate tempo. The vocal transitions to its span, which expands into a alloy of pianoforte, electrical and bass guitar, drums, and a singalong chorus with an anthemic feel. Electronic sounds from a synthesiser join during the second half of the bridge.[11] The song ends with the get-go chorus, with slow, melancholic piano notes beingness played in the background.

The message that Martin sings throughout, is of encouragement: "Lights will guide yous home / And ignite your basic / And I will endeavour to fix you."[12] [xiii] [xiv] Michele Hatty of Us Weekend reported that Martin sings near recovering from grief in the song.[15] Travis Gass of the Bangor Daily News wrote that Martin offers his sympathies for the downtrodden, with "When you love someone but information technology goes to waste / Could it exist worse?"[16]
